11.02.23: THE VOLCANO BENEATH YOUR FEET / GEOLOGY OF KĀKAUNUI/KAKANUI

Become an expert on local geologic attractions of Kākaunui/Kakanui. Discover the fascinating stories behind the local geosites, learn what they can tell us about the earth, and become inspired to share these special natural wonders with friends and family.


The Field Trip will start at the Kākaunui/Kakanui Hall (2 High Street) with a short presentation and introduction to the Waitaki Whitestone Geopark and wider geological context of this area. We will then head by car to the Kakanui Esplanade Playground and continue the Field Trip on foot from here. We will walk around the southern headland of Kākaunui/Kakanui and explore the crystal-rich deposits of an ancient volcano that reveal the composition of the Earth’s mantle. From there we will walk around the grass verge to Campbells Bay to learn about the sequence of rocks exposed there that formed when much of New Zealand was under the sea. On this trip you will also gain some basic geological mapping skills.


When? Saturday 11 February 2023, 12.30-3.30pm

Where? Start at Kākaunui/Kakanui Hall & after drive by private car to the southern headland.

Cost: $10 pP (Cash on the day)

Age range: 12+

Activity level: Moderate to good fitness and mobility required. We will be clambering down a bank and walking along a rocky shoreline.
